Acytous

A biological term that describes something lacking cells or consisting of a non-cellular structure. This often refers to substances, structures, or organisms that are not composed of cells, which are the fundamental units of life in most known life forms. The absence of cells distinguishes acytous entities from cellular organisms, emphasizing a fundamental difference in their composition and organization. Acytous meaning with examples

• The mineral deposit on the stalactite was acytous, formed purely from the slow accumulation of inorganic material, with no sign of cellular structure. Examination revealed the substance was formed from calcium carbonate precipitate, confirming it was acytous.
• Viruses, though capable of replication, are considered acytous because they lack the cellular machinery to independently reproduce. The viral structure itself consists of genetic material enclosed within a protein coat, and it is not a cellular organism. The virus must invade another living cell.
