Allergy

An allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction by the body's immune system to typically harmless substances in the environment, called allergens. This overreaction triggers the release of histamine and other chemicals, leading to a range of symptoms. The severity of an allergic reaction can vary greatly, from mild discomfort like a runny nose or itchy skin to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis. Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, food items, insect stings, medications, and certain materials. Diagnosis often involves skin prick tests or blood tests to identify specific allergens. Management of allergies includes avoiding allergens, taking antihistamines or other medications to alleviate symptoms, and, in severe cases, carrying an epinephrine auto-injector.
