Antiferromagnetism

Antiferromagnetism is a form of magnetism where neighboring magnetic moments of atoms or ions tend to align in opposite directions (anti-parallel) spontaneously below a certain temperature, known as the Néel temperature. This results in a net magnetization of zero, or very close to it. The opposed alignment arises from a quantum mechanical exchange interaction. Unlike ferromagnetism where magnetic moments align parallel, antiferromagnetism is characterized by ordered magnetic structures, which can be visualized as two interpenetrating magnetic sublattices with opposing magnetizations. The effect is suppressed above the Néel temperature.
