An Autocrat is a ruler who holds absolute power, typically gained and maintained without constitutional checks or legal restraints. This individual governs with unlimited authority, making decisions unilaterally and often suppressing dissent or opposition. Historically, autocrats have ruled over empires, kingdoms, and sometimes even smaller political entities. Their power is often rooted in hereditary succession, military control, or a combination of these. Autocracy, the system they preside over, typically involves a centralized government where the autocrat's will is law and individual liberties are often curtailed for the perceived benefit of the state or the ruler's own interests. The key feature is the absence of meaningful limits on their power and decision-making processes.

• The Roman Emperor, with his vast army and the Senate's diminished authority, functioned as an Autocrat, controlling all aspects of the vast empire. He made laws, commanded armies, and determined the fate of individuals. Though he may have sought counsel, the final decision rested solely on his decree. This concentration of power, however necessary to maintain the stability of the empire, ultimately created the risk of tyranny and abuses of power.
• King John of England, though nominally subject to the Magna Carta, frequently behaved as an autocrat. He disregarded the rights of his barons, imposed heavy taxes, and engaged in arbitrary rule. The barons' rebellion, resulting in the Magna Carta's reaffirmation, served as a rejection of his autocratic tendencies, attempting to impose constraints on his previously absolute power and setting the precedent for future limitations on monarchical authority.
• Following the revolution, the new leader, initially hailed as a liberator, gradually transitioned into an Autocrat, consolidating power by silencing opposition and rewriting the constitution to extend his term indefinitely.
