Bleaches

The word 'bleaches' refers to the process of whitening or lightening a substance by removing or decoloring pigments. This is often achieved through the use of chemical agents. Bleaching can be applied to a variety of materials including fabrics (like clothing), hair, wood, and even teeth. The agents used work by breaking down the chromophores (color-causing molecules) in the material, making the material appear lighter or white. The intensity and duration of the bleaching process can be carefully controlled to achieve a desired level of whitening, but can damage or weaken the material if done improperly or excessively. Common household bleaches often contain chlorine compounds.
