Blip

A blip is a sudden, usually temporary, change or deviation from a normal or expected state. It can refer to a momentary flash of light or sound, a brief interruption, or a short fluctuation in data, a transient anomaly in any continuous system, signifying an unexpected occurrence. Often it describes a small but noticeable change in a trend or pattern, or a minor glitch. It can be used both literally and metaphorically, encompassing everything from a radar screen anomaly to a sudden downturn in a company's profits. It is often used to diminish the importance of an event and should not be confused with significant changes.

Blip meaning with examples

• The radar screen showed a brief blip, but it quickly disappeared, indicating nothing significant was there. It was quickly dismissed as a technical error, or a bird, and the pilot and his crew continued on their course without issue. The minor visual blip caused little to no concern, as it quickly vanished.
• Despite the economic downturn, the company reported a brief blip of increased sales last quarter. This was an anomalous but welcome event. Many analysts remained skeptical of the trend, anticipating a return to the original pattern, the economic climate having not changed. The blip gave a small boost to the financial projections, though.
• During the concert, there was a slight blip in the audio system, causing a momentary crackle. The sound was immediately repaired, and the audience almost did not notice. The incident demonstrated a temporary drop in sound quality. Fortunately, the blip only lasted a second or so. The technical staff was grateful for the system's quick recovery.
• Their relationship experienced a blip during the holidays, but they worked it out. The quarrel was quickly resolved after the pair had communicated what they wanted from the relationship. They discussed the situation calmly, acknowledging the blip in the relationship. After the resolution they were back on track.
