Bytes are the fundamental unit of digital data, typically composed of 8 bits, used to represent a single character, number, or symbol. They measure the amount of information that a computer system can store or transmit. Larger units of data are typically multiples of bytes such as kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB). The size of a file or the capacity of a storage device are measured in bytes. The term is derived from "bite" and often used as a collective unit of computer storage capacity.

• The new video game requires a minimum of 4 gigabytes of free space to install. Each game file's size, including graphics, audio, and code, is measured in bytes. Installing, downloading, and uploading files all require byte utilization. Modern storage technology relies on bytes as a measure of data.
• When sending an email, the attached image's file size, measured in kilobytes, represents the number of bytes used to encode the image's visual information. Text-based emails use far fewer bytes than image or video file emails. Each character typed contributes to the email's total byte count.
