Carburized describes the process of infusing carbon into the surface of a ferrous alloy, typically steel. This heat treatment technique increases the surface hardness and wear resistance of the metal while maintaining a relatively tough core. The process usually involves heating the steel in a carbon-rich environment, such as a gas, liquid, or solid compound containing carbon. The carbon atoms diffuse into the steel's surface, forming a hardened layer. The depth and carbon content of this layer can be controlled based on the specific application.
Carburized meaning with examples
- The machine shop carburized the gear teeth to enhance their durability and ability to withstand the constant friction of the meshing surfaces. This significantly extended the lifespan of the gears. After the process was complete, the gears were then heat-treated in a furnace.
- To improve the resistance to wear, the manufacturer carburized the ball bearings used in the high-speed rotating assembly. This was a crucial process. The carburization process made the bearings much more suitable for the rigors of use.
- The engineer decided to carburize the cam shaft on the engine to achieve high surface hardness. This allowed the cam shaft to endure the contact from the high pressure valve springs. Carburization made this component last longer.
