Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive liver disease characterized by the gradual destruction of liver cells and their replacement with scar tissue (fibrosis). This scarring disrupts the liver's normal structure and function, impairing its ability to filter toxins, produce essential proteins, and perform other vital metabolic processes. Common causes include chronic alcohol abuse, hepatitis B and C infections, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Over time, cirrhosis can lead to liver failure, portal hypertension, and other life-threatening complications.
