Cis-heteronormative describes the societal assumption and expectation that everyone is cisgender (identifies with the gender they were assigned at birth) and heterosexual. It frames these as the natural, normal, and default states, often invisibilizing or marginalizing individuals who identify outside of these categories. This viewpoint manifests in various ways, from language and media representation to institutional policies and everyday social interactions. It privileges the experiences and perspectives of cisgender and heterosexual individuals, often at the expense of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

This implicit message normalizes heterosexuality while leaving non-heterosexual relationships invisible, excluding LGBTQ+ viewers who don't see themselves reflected, reducing the diversity and inclusivity of storytelling, and reinforcing societal expectations of cisgendered heterosexual relationships.
