Claypan

A Claypan is a subsurface horizon in soils, often found in arid or semi-arid regions. It's characterized by a significant accumulation of clay particles, making it dense, hard, and relatively impermeable to water and root penetration. This layer typically forms a distinct layer or zone within the soil profile, lying beneath the surface layer (topsoil). The clay accumulation results in poor drainage, leading to surface ponding after rainfall, and can severely restrict plant growth by limiting both water and air availability to roots. Claypans can vary in thickness and depth, impacting the usability of the land for agriculture or other purposes.
