A condenser is a device that concentrates something, typically from a gaseous or dispersed state to a more compact or liquid form. This is most commonly associated with converting steam or vapor back into a liquid state, often water, through cooling. The term applies broadly across various fields, including physics, engineering, and electronics, encompassing mechanisms like optical systems, electrical components, and chemical apparatus used for thickening, compacting, or cooling a substance.

Condenser meaning with examples

• In a power plant, the condenser is a crucial component. It receives steam from the turbine and cools it, causing it to condense back into water. This water is then returned to the boiler, completing the cycle and enabling continuous power generation. This process efficiently reuses water to reduce waste and enhance the thermodynamic efficiency of the plant.
• The air conditioning unit contains a condenser that removes heat from the refrigerant. As the hot refrigerant gas passes through the condenser, it is cooled and condensed into a liquid. This condensed refrigerant then flows to the expansion valve, restarting the cycle and providing cooling inside the home.
• In a distillation process, the condenser cools the vapor rising from the heated mixture, causing it to condense into a liquid that can be collected and separated. This is a fundamental process in the separation of components of chemical substances, for example the purification of ethanol.
• Older radios use a condenser to store electrical charge and help filter signals. They work by storing energy between two plates, where the amount of energy is adjusted by the proximity of the plates. While their function is largely replicated by newer technologies, the condenser was fundamental to early radio technology.
