Crownwork

A crownwork is a detached outwork in fortification, typically constructed as an irregular polygon with bastions and often a ravelin, designed to strengthen a defensive position. Primarily used in the period of gunpowder warfare, crownworks offered additional lines of fire and protection, increasing a fortress's resistance against siege. Strategically placed, they could protect key areas, such as gateways, or provide flanking fire on approaching enemies. The term reflects its resemblance to a crown encircling the main fortification. They are typically built on higher ground, providing vantage points.
