Deoxycorticosterone (DOC), also known as desoxycorticosterone, is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. It is a mineralocorticoid, meaning it plays a key role in regulating the balance of electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium, and consequently, blood pressure. DOC acts on the kidneys, promoting sodium retention and potassium excretion. It is a precursor to aldosterone, the primary mineralocorticoid in humans, but DOC has its own activity and can contribute to hypertension if produced in excess. Its synthesis is mediated by the enzyme CYP11B2. It is sometimes used medicinally as a replacement therapy or to treat specific adrenal disorders.
