Detergent

A synthetic cleaning agent, typically a water-soluble substance that, like soap, emulsifies oils and fats, removes dirt, and suspends it in the washing water. Unlike soap, detergents are often made from petroleum-based ingredients, making them effective in both hard and soft water. They work through a combination of surfactant action, which lowers the surface tension of water, and the use of various additives to enhance their cleaning and rinsing abilities. Detergents are available in liquid, powder, and tablet forms, formulated for specific cleaning tasks.
