Dew

Dew is the condensed moisture that appears as droplets on thin, exposed surfaces in the morning or evening due to the air cooling and becoming saturated with water vapor. This atmospheric phenomenon typically occurs on grass, leaves, and other objects, and it results from radiative cooling during clear, still nights. The formation of dew is influenced by factors such as air temperature, humidity, wind, and the surface material. The process is essentially the opposite of evaporation, as water molecules in the air transition from a gaseous state to a liquid state upon coming into contact with a cool surface. It’s a common sight in gardens and fields, marking the passage of the night and signaling the start of a new day. The presence of dew can also contribute to the hydration of plants, supporting their growth.

Dew meaning with examples

• The early morning sun illuminated the meadow, glistening on the blades of grass covered in a thick layer of dew. The tiny droplets sparkled, reflecting the colours of the sky and the surrounding landscape. It was so beautiful to behold. The farmers knew it would be a good growing season.
• As twilight descended, a gentle dew began to settle upon the picnic blanket, cooling the leftover sandwiches and making the grass damp. The children were told to come inside, as it was no longer safe to sit on the wet grass with the onset of winter and cold weather. We were told to come in as well.
