Dewlaps

Dewlaps are loose folds of skin that hang beneath the neck or throat of certain animals, particularly cattle, goats, dogs, and some birds. They can vary considerably in size and shape, ranging from small, subtle folds to large, pendulous structures. The primary function of dewlaps remains a subject of ongoing scientific inquiry. However, they are believed to play roles in thermoregulation, visual signaling (display), and possibly even assisting in the capture and consumption of food. They are often more prominent in male animals and can be a secondary sexual characteristic. The presence and size of a dewlap can also be influenced by breed, age, and overall body condition of the animal.

• The Brahman bull's massive dewlap swayed rhythmically as it grazed in the pasture, a clear indicator of its breed and powerful build. It would move as it turned its head to eat some grass and could even be seen as a way to communicate to other animals in the herd. The heat made the dewlap look like it was constantly wet and glistening as if it was designed to help cool the animal.
