A **discolorant** is a substance or agent, whether chemical, physical, or biological, that causes a change in the original color of a material. This color alteration can result from various processes, including chemical reactions (oxidation, reduction), absorption or scattering of light, or the presence of colored impurities. Discolorants can affect a wide range of materials, such as textiles, paper, plastics, food products, and even natural elements like skin or wood. The degree and type of discoloration vary depending on the discolorant and the material it acts upon.

• Exposure to sunlight acted as a discolorant on the vibrant red fabric of the outdoor furniture, fading it to a dull pink over several seasons. The UV rays within the sunlight damaged the dye molecules, leading to the color change that made the fabric's original hue disappear. The need for a solution prompted the owners to buy covers to preserve the color.
• Chlorine, often used as a disinfectant, also serves as a discolorant on colored fabrics, especially those made with natural dyes. A splash of chlorine bleach on her favorite blue t-shirt left a noticeable white splotch, showing that the bleaching caused by the chlorine was immediate.
