Dissonance refers to a harsh or disagreeable combination of sounds, ideas, or opinions. It often evokes a sense of conflict, instability, or tension due to a lack of harmony or agreement. In music, it involves notes or chords that clash. Beyond music, it applies to conflicting viewpoints, contradictory information, or anything that feels out of sync or jarring to the senses or intellect. Dissonance can create unease, challenge expectations, and even prompt reflection or change, but at its core lies a sense of imbalance or discord.
