A ditch is a long, narrow excavation made in the ground, usually for drainage or irrigation. In a more colloquial sense, 'ditching' can mean to get rid of, or 'leave something behind', often abruptly. Further, it may refer to the act of landing an aircraft in the sea in an emergency situation.
