- Plastic bottles might be downcycled into park benches, losing their original form and value. The polymer degrades during the process. While the bench still serves a purpose, the plastic's initial potential for food-grade packaging is lost. This is a common application of plastic recycling, preventing the waste from filling up landfills. The park benches still perform their job, but it's less than the plastics original job.
- Old newspapers and cardboard boxes can be downcycled into paperboard or insulation material.
