Ectoparasite

An ectoparasite is an organism that lives on the exterior surface of a host organism, deriving nourishment at the host's expense. Unlike endoparasites that live inside the host, ectoparasites are found on the skin, fur, feathers, or other external coverings. This external location allows for easier dispersal but exposes them to environmental factors. They often possess specialized mouthparts or appendages for attaching to and feeding on the host, and they can transmit diseases. Their feeding can cause irritation, skin lesions, and anemia in their hosts.

• Fleas are common ectoparasites that infest mammals, including dogs and cats. They feed on the host's blood, causing intense itching and potential allergic reactions. Fleas also act as vectors for transmitting diseases like flea-borne typhus and tapeworms.
