Efflorescence

Efflorescence (pronounced ef-luh-RES-uhns) refers to the process by which a powdery, crystalline deposit forms on the surface of a material, often a mineral or a masonry material, due to the migration of salts dissolved in water to the surface and their subsequent crystallization upon evaporation of the water. This process is common in building materials like bricks, concrete, and stucco and manifests as a white or colored bloom. It is a visible sign that moisture has been present and has dissolved salts within the material, eventually leaving them on the surface. The appearance of efflorescence doesn't necessarily indicate a structural problem but can be a sign of ongoing moisture issues. The salts may come from the material itself, the surrounding soil, or the water used in construction.

Efflorescence meaning with examples

• The old brick wall exhibited a significant efflorescence, with white, powdery patches covering much of its surface. This unsightly phenomenon, caused by salt deposits, suggested that moisture was consistently penetrating the bricks from the ground below. Without addressing the source of the water, the efflorescence will continue to reappear, degrading the aesthetic appearance and the longevity of the bricks.
