Estriol
Estriol (E3) is a naturally occurring estrogen steroid hormone, primarily produced during pregnancy by the placenta from precursors synthesized by the fetal adrenal glands and liver. It's a weak estrogen compared to estradiol (E2). While present in non-pregnant women, the levels are significantly lower. Estriol plays a critical role in preparing the uterus for childbirth, enhancing the elasticity of the cervix and vagina. Measurement of Estriol levels can be used to monitor fetal well-being during pregnancy and to assess placental function. It also has therapeutic applications, particularly in managing symptoms of menopause such as vaginal atrophy. Estriol's influence extends to skin, impacting collagen production and reducing wrinkles, and in preventing bone loss. The biological activity of Estriol arises from its interaction with estrogen receptors within cells.
Estriol meaning with examples
- During the third trimester, a doctor will often measure the Estriol levels in the mother’s blood to make sure that both mother and child are doing well. Low levels of Estriol can indicate a problem with the placenta or the fetus's health. An elevated level, on the other hand, may indicate a multiple pregnancy.
- Estriol cream is sometimes prescribed to treat vaginal atrophy, a condition that occurs when the vaginal tissues become thin and dry, usually due to decreased estrogen levels after menopause. This treatment can help to restore the tissue, reducing discomfort and improving sexual function.
- Research has explored the role of Estriol in managing menopausal symptoms beyond vaginal atrophy. Studies suggest its potential in alleviating hot flashes, improving mood, and strengthening bone density, although more extensive research is needed to ascertain the effectiveness and safety.
- Although often referred to as the ‘pregnancy estrogen’, Estriol has also been studied for its potential in other areas, such as skin care. Certain products include Estriol to potentially improve the elasticity of the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improving overall skin health.
