Ether

Ether has multiple meanings stemming from its historical context. Primarily, it refers to a volatile, highly flammable, colorless liquid (diethyl ether), used as an anesthetic and solvent. In older, now largely obsolete usage, 'ether' denoted a hypothetical invisible medium believed to permeate all of space and transmit light and other electromagnetic radiation. This concept, also called 'aether,' was a crucial element in 19th-century physics but was disproven by the Michelson-Morley experiment. Finally, in a more metaphorical sense, ether can describe a seemingly weightless, rarefied atmosphere or a subtle, non-physical realm.
