Feldsparite

Feldsparite is a rare and hypothetical mineral composed of feldspar group minerals, primarily plagioclase and alkali feldspar, combined with significant amounts of silica. The term is generally considered an outdated or unofficial designation, as it does not represent a distinct, independently recognized mineral species in the accepted classifications of mineralogy. Its use, if encountered, typically refers to a rock or complex mineral assemblage where the feldspar components are exceptionally abundant, dominating the overall composition, and bound to silica-rich matrices. Due to the loose and somewhat ambiguous definition, precise chemical compositions and crystal structures for feldsparite have not been formally established, thus being an outdated and theoretical term in most modern contexts. Therefore, most geologists and mineralogists no longer use the term.

Feldsparite meaning with examples

  • Geological analysis in a remote region suggested that the primary rock type found consisted of feldspar crystals within a matrix of silica. The team was looking for evidence of the hypothesized feldsparite deposit. The lack of formal identification of a feldsparite structure and chemistry made classification difficult for the discovery.
  • Early attempts at mapping the geology of the region referred to certain rock formations as 'feldsparite-rich zones,' based on the high concentration of feldspar within the surrounding quartz, but with time and more rigorous scientific processes, it did not gain any official acknowledgement.
  • During an experimental synthesis of various rock types, the term 'feldsparite' was invoked to describe one sample with an extremely high feldspar content, however, the composition fell short of formal mineral requirements. Despite the high concentration, the composition of the compound proved to be a blend.
  • In older geological literature, some references mention 'feldsparite' as a possible stage in the magmatic differentiation of granite, however, current interpretations don't use this classification or even this hypothetical structure.
  • Researching legacy geological data sometimes requires understanding that 'feldsparite' was used, however inconsistently, to describe any rock that was predominantly composed of various feldspars and silica, such as the feldspar rich rock discovered in the field today.
