Flatfoot

Flatfoot, medically termed pes planus, describes a condition where the arch of the foot collapses, causing the entire sole to touch the ground when standing. This can range in severity, from flexible flatfoot, where the arch appears when not bearing weight, to rigid flatfoot, where the arch is absent regardless of position. Often, it's asymptomatic, but can cause pain in the feet, ankles, legs, and even the back. Causes include genetics, weak arches, injury, and certain medical conditions. Treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms and may involve arch supports (orthotics), supportive footwear, exercises, and in severe cases, surgery. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, observing the foot's arch and gait, and sometimes imaging like X-rays or CT scans to rule out other issues. It can affect anyone but is more common in children and the elderly, as well as people who are overweight.
