Focalization is the narrative technique or literary device through which a story is presented from a specific point of view, influencing the reader's understanding and experience. It determines whose perspective the reader adopts, the depth of information provided, and the biases that might color the events described. Essentially, it is the selection and control of the narrative's 'lens' to shape the reader's perception of events and characters. Different types of focalization exist, including: internal (where the narrative follows a character's thoughts and perceptions), external (where the narrator observes from an outside perspective, reporting actions and dialogue), and zero or omniscient (where the narrator has access to all characters' thoughts and experiences).
