The absence of other sound classes, such as stops (plosives like /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/), nasals (/m/, /n/), or affricates (combinations like /tʃ/ as in 'chair', /dʒ/ as in 'judge') characterizes a fricative-only system. This is often observed as a simplification in language acquisition or in certain disordered speech contexts. A fricative-only system can sometimes result from anatomical constraints or a phonological shift.
