Generalities
Generalities refer to statements or ideas that are broad in scope and lack specific detail or concrete evidence. They often involve making sweeping claims or observations without providing particular examples or substantiation. generalities can be useful for introducing a topic or providing an overview, but they can also be vague and unhelpful if they don't offer a deeper understanding or actionable insights. They can also be considered platitudes that don't necessarily provide solutions and/or further insights.
Generalities meaning with examples
- The politician's speech was filled with uplifting generalities about progress and prosperity. While the crowd was inspired, critics noted a lack of specific policies or plans to achieve these goals. The speech, although encouraging, offered no concrete strategies to tackle real-world economic concerns. It was all very broad and, when analysed, contained little of substance on the important subject of public debt.
- In the novel, the author used generalities to describe the character's internal struggles, such as 'a sense of unease' or 'growing doubt.' While evocative, these descriptions did not fully reveal the character's individual feelings or motivations which would've allowed the reader a deeper insight into the character's psyche. Instead of detailed introspection, the author provided vague descriptions, which hindered the reader's engagement.
- During the brainstorming session, the initial suggestions were filled with generalities such as 'improve customer satisfaction' and 'increase market share.' The facilitator prompted the team to transform these broad statements into concrete actions, measurable targets and well-defined plans to transform these generalities. After that, a focused strategy came into shape which gave all participants greater clarity.
- The history textbook presented a narrative of cause and effect using generalities, stating that 'economic hardship led to social unrest,' without highlighting the key contributing factors or specific economic indicators. The student found the narrative frustrating, as the lack of depth made it difficult to grasp the complexities of historical events. This led to a rather broad understanding of the subject at hand.
