Genocide

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a group of people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, or race. It involves acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. These acts can include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group, or forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. It is considered a crime under international law and is recognized as one of the most heinous offenses against humanity.

  • During the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, members of the Hutu majority systematically murdered members of the Tutsi minority and moderate Hutus. The violence involved mass killings, rape, and the destruction of property, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. International condemnation followed, but interventions were slow, and the devastation remains a deeply scarring event.
  • The Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman government during World War I, saw the mass killing of Armenian people. This Genocide was a complex network of policies, including forced labor, ghettoization, and extermination camps, intended to annihilate the Jewish population of Europe and other targeted groups, leaving a permanent scar.
  • The Cambodian Genocide, which took place under the Khmer Rouge regime, resulted in the deaths of millions of Cambodians.
