Heterogeneity refers to the state or quality of being diverse in character or content. It signifies a lack of uniformity and a presence of multiple, differing elements within a group, system, or data set. It often implies that there is a significant variation or dissimilarity between individual components. In essence, heterogeneity highlights the contrast to homogeneity, which represents a state of similarity or uniformity. It’s a crucial concept in various fields like biology, economics, statistics, and computer science, helping analyze and understand complex systems that are not all alike.

Heterogeneity meaning with examples

• The research team encountered significant heterogeneity within the patient sample. Some patients responded well to the treatment while others did not. This diversity in responses made it hard to find an effective treatment for all patients. Consequently, they need to account for those differences when planning further clinical trials, making the trial more complex but more likely to identify truly effective interventions.
