Relating to or exhibiting hysteresis, the dependence of a system's output not only on its current input but also on its past input or history. This phenomenon causes a lagging effect, meaning the output response trails the input change. It's often seen in systems where energy is dissipated or stored during a process, leading to a memory effect. This 'memory' can be advantageous, but can also hinder the predictive power of a model. The word originates from 'hysteresis,' derived from the Greek 'hysterein,' meaning 'to lag behind' or 'to be late'. Understanding hysteretic behavior is critical in engineering, physics, and economics.

Hysteretic meaning with examples

• The magnetic core of the transformer exhibited a hysteretic behavior, meaning the magnetization of the core lagged behind the changes in the applied current. This 'memory' impacted the efficiency, causing energy loss during each cycle of the AC current flowing through the primary windings of the transformer. This lag is why we have hysteretic loops.
• The shape memory alloy used in the actuator demonstrated hysteretic response to temperature changes. As the temperature increased, the alloy underwent a phase transformation; upon cooling, the transformation occurred at a slightly lower temperature, showing the material's memory of its previous state. This allows for unique actuator designs.
