Idealizing is the process of viewing something or someone as perfect, or far better than it actually is. It involves attributing exaggerated qualities, often positive ones, that may not be based on reality or sufficient evidence. This can apply to people, situations, objects, or abstract concepts. The act often stems from emotional needs, desires, or a longing for something unattainable. Idealization can lead to disappointment when reality inevitably clashes with the inflated perception and can also cloud judgement.

• Sarah's idealizing of her new boyfriend caused her to overlook his flaws and red flags. She focused only on his charming qualities, ignoring the inconsistencies in his behavior. This made her vulnerable to emotional distress. In this state of idealization, the reality was not fully acknowledged.
