Insensitization
Insensitization refers to the process by which a biological or psychological system becomes less responsive to a specific stimulus over time. This diminished responsiveness can occur at various levels, from the cellular level with receptor desensitization, to the behavioral level, where repeated exposure to a stimulus leads to a reduced emotional or physical reaction. Factors such as the intensity, duration, and frequency of the stimulus, as well as individual characteristics, can influence the degree and speed of insensitization. It's a crucial mechanism for adaptation and homeostasis, allowing organisms to filter out irrelevant stimuli and prioritize those that are novel or potentially threatening. Repeated exposure to the stimulus weakens its effects.

- Repeated exposure to a mild allergen can lead to insensitization, reducing the severity of allergic reactions over time. This is the principle behind allergy shots, where gradually increasing doses of the allergen are administered. The immune system learns to tolerate the allergen. Patients report a significant decrease in seasonal allergy symptoms. Desensitization, is often a medical treatment and a slow but gradual adjustment.
