An 'intermediate' level or stage lies between two others in a series; it is neither the beginning nor the end, but rather a middle point or a transitional phase. This term can also describe a person possessing a moderate level of skill or knowledge, or something acting as a mediator or go-between. It signifies a point of progression or a state of being in-between, used across diverse fields like education, technology, and social relations to describe a position or a process that serves as a link or a stepping stone between extremes. This concept is fundamental in describing processes, skills, or states that are not at the extremes.

Intermediate meaning with examples

• The cooking class offered three levels, and I signed up for the intermediate course. The chef explained techniques bridging basic and advanced skills, like mastering sauces and understanding flavor profiles, enhancing the novice cooks skills. Participants developed new techniques through guided practice before attempting more difficult cooking projects.
• The software used an intermediate programming language. It served as a bridge between high-level human-readable code and low-level machine code, making complex tasks simpler. It abstracted away much of the hardware, promoting portability across different computing systems and easier debugging of code.
• During peace negotiations, the ambassador acted as an intermediate. He facilitated communication between the warring factions, conveying messages and working towards a compromise. He was neutral and fostered an environment which allowed the conflicting parties to finally start listening to each other.
