A kilogram (kg) is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). It's defined as being equal to the mass of the International Prototype of the kilogram (IPK), which is a physical object, specifically a platinum-iridium alloy cylinder, kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in France. The kilogram is essential for scientific measurement, trade, and everyday life, serving as a standard against which other masses are measured. It is equal to 1000 grams.
