This term describes the environment, conditions, or features associated with bodies of shallow, often brackish, water separated from a larger body of water by a barrier such as a reef, sandbank, or a spit. It can be applied to describe the flora, fauna, geological formations, or ecological processes occurring within such coastal environments. The term also extends to any man made construction in which a body of water is seperated from a main body of water.
