Luddite

A luddite is a person opposed to new technologies or ways of working. Historically, the term refers to 19th-century English textile workers who protested against the introduction of power looms, believing these machines threatened their jobs and livelihoods. Today, the term is often used more broadly to describe anyone who is resistant to technological advancements, change, or modern conveniences. A Luddite's skepticism may stem from concerns about job displacement, social impact, environmental consequences, or a general preference for traditional methods and values. They may prioritize human interaction and craftsmanship over efficiency and automation.

• Despite the overwhelming popularity of smartphones, my grandfather remained a staunch luddite, refusing to adopt any technology beyond his landline telephone. He argued that constant connection diminished face-to-face interactions. His family frequently tried to get him to use an iphone, but he would just refuse, saying 'I am perfectly fine as is'. He was content in his life of simplicity and non-reliance on tech.
• The community newspaper editor, known for his old-fashioned printing methods and insistence on local news, was considered something of a luddite by the younger staff. He was the only one who did not want to have a web-based service, always saying 'I don't need those contraptions'. He held onto tradition, believing the personal touch of the local paper was irreplaceable and could never be substituted.
