Myofilament
A myofilament is a protein filament responsible for muscle contraction. Primarily composed of the proteins actin and myosin, myofilaments are organized into repeating units called sarcomeres, the basic functional units of muscle fibers. Actin filaments are thin and provide the binding sites for myosin. Myosin filaments are thicker and possess motor proteins that utilize ATP to generate the force required for muscle contraction. The precise arrangement of myofilaments within a sarcomere determines the muscle's ability to contract and generate movement.

- During muscle contraction, the interdigitation of actin and myosin myofilaments causes the sarcomere to shorten. This process is fueled by the hydrolysis of ATP by myosin heads, leading to the sliding of filaments and the generation of force. - Skeletal muscle cells contain numerous parallel myofibrils, each consisting of many sarcomeres, composed of myofilaments.
