Non-capillary-active

Describing a substance or material that does not exhibit capillary action. Capillary action is the spontaneous movement of a liquid upward against gravity within a narrow space, such as a tube or a porous material, driven by the forces of adhesion (attraction between the liquid and the surface) and cohesion (attraction between liquid molecules). A non-capillary-active substance, therefore, does not demonstrate this phenomenon. This is often due to factors like a lack of surface wetting or the absence of suitable surface tension dynamics for the liquid and the material it contacts. Such substances are often hydrophobic or have properties that discourage the liquid from spreading or climbing.

Non-capillary-active meaning with examples

  • The newly developed Teflon coating is non-capillary-active; water beads up and rolls off, preventing absorption and staining. This makes it ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture resistance is critical. This property is what makes Teflon cookware non-stick, and prevents staining of porous surfaces. Water does not spread up the sides of the surface.
  • In specialized medical equipment, specific materials used are non-capillary-active to prevent the wicking of blood or other bodily fluids along narrow channels, ensuring accurate measurements and avoiding contamination. This is important when manufacturing internal valves. Otherwise there could be blockages that result in device failure.
  • Researchers used a non-capillary-active solution to test the absorbency of various fabrics. The liquid didn't spread through the material like regular water would. By seeing the lack of spread, it's easier to analyze how quickly the material absorbs regular water, and to what extent. This allows for precise testing.
  • Certain types of synthetic fibers designed for outdoor wear are designed to be non-capillary-active, repelling moisture and keeping the wearer dry even in damp conditions. The surface prevents water from clinging to the fibers which makes them ideal for outdoor use, even in the rain. The user can feel drier, and keep their core temperature.
  • In the context of soil science, a soil that is treated with a certain substance could become non-capillary-active. This would reduce water retention and improve drainage, which is beneficial for some crop types, and prevents the formation of puddles. This can improve air flow to the plant roots. The non-spreading can protect the plant.
