Non-economic

Referring to activities, factors, or considerations that are not primarily related to the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services, or the financial aspects of life. It encompasses aspects of life not directly driven by profit, market forces, or monetary value. Instead, it focuses on social, cultural, political, ethical, environmental, or personal values and influences. This term implies a focus on areas where value is derived from sources other than financial gain or the economic system. Such areas are often concerned with factors which make a society whole and functional, or factors which enrich a person’s character.

Non-economic meaning with examples

• The preservation of endangered species, despite potentially limiting certain economic activities, is a non-economic consideration driven by environmental and ethical concerns. This value system prioritizes biodiversity and ecological balance over short-term financial gains, demonstrating a non-economic priority. Such environmental protections are crucial.
• Volunteer work, as in time donated without expectation of monetary reward, falls under the realm of non-economic activities. The value derived is in aiding others or community benefit, not profit. This form of giving focuses on social capital, personal fulfillment, and the common good, and so falls outside the economic sphere.
