It often applies to subjects within the realms of biology, chemistry (unless focused on geological processes), anthropology, astronomy, sociology, economics, and the humanities. The focus is on excluding areas relating to earth sciences such as mineralogy, seismology, or paleontology.

Non-geological meaning with examples

• The study of ancient pottery shards found at the archaeological dig site involved non-geological methods of analysis, such as carbon dating and compositional analysis through spectroscopic techniques, but did not delve into the geological context of the surrounding soil or rock formations. The focus was on the artifacts and their cultural significance.
• Researchers studying the effects of climate change on migratory bird populations employed non-geological data, including observations of bird behavior, temperature fluctuations, and vegetation changes in their study of ecosystem impact. They didn't analyze any geological formations or seismic activity.
