Describing something that cannot be passed from one organism to another, particularly referring to diseases or conditions. This characteristic signifies the absence of infectiousness or contagiousness. The term is often used in public health and medical contexts to differentiate conditions that are not spread through direct or indirect contact, bodily fluids, or airborne particles from transmissible diseases. non-transmissible conditions can arise from genetic predispositions, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, or the aging process, rather than being caused by pathogens. Such ailments require different prevention and treatment strategies than contagious diseases. They don't spread through a host.
Non-transmissible meaning with examples
- Osteoarthritis, a common joint condition, is considered non-transmissible. Its development is primarily linked to wear and tear on the cartilage over time. You cannot catch osteoarthritis from another person, only inherited traits make you vulnerable.
- While research continues, many forms of cancer are generally considered non-transmissible, meaning they don't spread through contact. Cancer results from a mutation. They can however be caused by transmissible agents such as HPV.
- Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, often has a non-transmissible etiology related to factors like diet, genetics, and exercise. Poor habits will influence the rate and chances of disease, rather than another person.
