Referring to a system or device that is connected to the main electrical power grid, receiving or supplying electricity from/to it. This connection typically provides a stable and reliable power source, allowing users to draw power when needed and potentially feed excess power back into the grid. Being on-grid often implies adherence to specific regulatory standards and the possibility of financial incentives related to energy production or consumption. Conversely, it can also imply dependence on a centralized system, which is outside of a user's direct control.

On-grid meaning with examples

• The homeowner installed solar panels to reduce their reliance on the on-grid power supply. Their system now generates electricity, and any excess is fed back into the grid. They receive credit for the energy they sell back, making their energy bills significantly lower and contributing to a greener energy system.
• Most urban residences in developed countries are on-grid, automatically receiving electricity through the established infrastructure. This eliminates the need for independent power generation and offers the convenience of a readily available, consistent energy supply, which minimizes the need for energy storage solutions for the end-user.
• The new factory's design prioritized being on-grid from the beginning, with the electrical requirements mapped out and accounted for, rather than developing their own private power source.
