Orientalized
The act of portraying, representing, or interpreting cultures, people, or objects of the East (primarily the Middle East and Asia) through a Western perspective, often involving stereotyping, exoticizing, and misrepresenting them. It encompasses the construction of the 'Orient' as a contrasting entity to the 'Occident' (the West), where the East is often depicted as mysterious, sensual, despotic, and inferior, serving to reinforce Western cultural dominance and power structures. This process can involve both intentional and unintentional biases, shaping perceptions and influencing interactions. It is a complex process involving the use of power and culture as tools for representation of the 'other', and for the purposes of control, manipulation, and influence. It also carries within its application, historical elements of prejudice, marginalization and bias.
