Osteoma

An osteoma is a benign (non-cancerous) bone tumor. It's characterized by an abnormal growth of mature bone tissue. Osteomas are typically slow-growing and painless, often discovered incidentally during imaging studies performed for other reasons. While they can occur in any bone, they most commonly appear in the skull and facial bones, specifically the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. They can sometimes cause symptoms like headaches, facial swelling, or vision changes if they grow large enough to press on surrounding structures. Diagnosis usually involves imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, and occasionally MRI. Treatment isn't always necessary, but surgical removal might be considered if the osteoma causes symptoms or cosmetic concerns.

• During a routine sinus scan for recurring headaches, a small osteoma was identified in the frontal sinus of the patient. The radiologist noted its small size and benign appearance, suggesting monitoring rather than immediate intervention was appropriate.
• A patient complaining of facial asymmetry and slight pressure underwent imaging. The results revealed a relatively large osteoma on the mandible, necessitating surgical removal to alleviate discomfort and improve facial aesthetics.
• A dental patient's panoramic X-ray showed an osteoma on the palate. The dentist referred the patient to an oral surgeon for evaluation. Although asymptomatic currently, its size warrants monitoring or potentially removal if the osteoma continues to grow.
• Following a head injury, a CT scan was conducted and found an osteoma near the orbital margin. Because it was unrelated to the injury and asymptomatic, the neurosurgeon decided on regular follow-up scans.
