Oxidizer

An oxidizer is a substance that readily accepts electrons from a reducing agent in a chemical reaction. This process, known as oxidation, results in the reducing agent being oxidized (losing electrons) and the oxidizer being reduced (gaining electrons). Oxidizers are essential for combustion and many other chemical reactions, providing the necessary element (typically oxygen, but also others like fluorine or chlorine) to initiate or sustain these processes. The strength of an oxidizer is determined by its oxidizing potential or standard reduction potential. Different oxidizers vary in their reactivity and ability to initiate an oxidizing process. Many are highly dangerous.

  • Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) acts as a powerful oxidizer, commonly used as a bleaching agent and disinfectant. Its ability to readily accept electrons makes it effective in oxidizing organic compounds. Industrial applications also include use in the chemical industry. Be sure to not mix it with many substances, as it can combust.
  • In rocket propulsion, liquid oxygen (LOX) serves as a critical oxidizer, reacting with fuel to generate the thrust needed for liftoff. The energetic oxidation reaction is the fundamental process that drives the rocket's engines and allows it to achieve orbit. The reaction also generates intense heat.
  • Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is a strong laboratory oxidizer used in various analytical chemistry experiments and water treatment applications. This purple-colored solid effectively oxidizes a range of substances. Potassium Permanganate can be very dangerous if mishandled.
