Pachyderms

Pachyderms are a now-obsolete taxonomic grouping of large, thick-skinned mammals. Derived from the Greek words "pakhys" (thick) and "derma" (skin), the term was historically used to classify animals such as elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, and tapirs due to their substantial skin thickness. While no longer scientifically accurate, it remains a descriptive term often found in literature and casual conversation to refer collectively to these specific megafauna with their notable physical characteristic. The grouping has been superseded by modern cladistics based on evolutionary relationships, with the included species now falling into distinct, unrelated orders. Nevertheless, 'pachyderm' is useful for evocative descriptions.
