Palanquin

A palanquin is a covered litter, usually enclosed and carried on the shoulders of several people using poles. It's a traditional mode of transport, historically common in Asia and parts of Africa and Europe, particularly before the rise of carriages. Palanquins offered a luxurious and comfortable way to travel, especially for the wealthy and those of high status, protecting them from the elements and providing privacy. The number of bearers indicated the rank of the passenger. They also used a wide range of construction materials. The practice, while still present, is mostly seen in tourist settings now.
